As of Wednesday afternoon, only six local candidates have made it official by filing at the McDowell County Board of Elections office to seek elected office during 2024.
The candidate filing for the 2024 primary elections began Monday, Dec. 4, at noon and will end on Friday, Dec. 15, at noon. Candidates for local office are able to file at the McDowell County Board of Elections building, located at 2458 N.C. 226 South, Marion. Other offices require that the candidate file with the N.C. Board of Elections in Raleigh.
The 2024 primary elections will happen on Tuesday, March 5.
The following people filed at the local Board of Elections to run for offices in McDowell as of Wednesday. They are listed in the order in which they filed.
Chris Allison, 40, of 98 Long St. in Marion, filed Monday to run for county commissioner. He works as a salesman. He is a Republican and an incumbent.

Brian Piercy, 51, of 51 Brookfield Lane in Old Fort, also filed Monday to run for county commissioner. He works as a firefighter. He is a Republican and a challenger.
Greg Barksdale, 60, of 19 Woodland Drive in Marion, filed Monday to run for the Marion District Seat on the Board of Education. He is retired and a rifle range supervisor. He is a Republican and a challenger.
Lydia Effler, 52, of 24 Willoughby Way in Marion, filed Monday to run for the office of register of deeds. She is a Republican and the incumbent holder of this office.
Patrick Ellis, 57, of 93 Moffitt Hill Road in Old Fort, filed Monday to run for county commissioner. He is a program manager. He is a Republican and a challenger.
Trisha Kay Garner, 44, of 1189 Forest Country Drive in Marion filed Wednesday to run for county commissioner. She works in sales and interior design. She is a Republican and a challenger.
In 2024, two seats on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners will be up election. The filing fee is $196.45.
Next year, there will be an election for the McDowell County Board of Education and, for first time, it will be a partisan race. The filing fee to run for the school board is $5.
Two of the Marion seats will be for election in 2024. The North Cove seat on the Board of Education will be contested as well as the Old Fort seat. The West Marion seat will also be on the 2024 ballot.
In 2024, the Register of Deeds office will be up for election. The filing fee is $571.75 since it is considered a full-time job.
Next year, the N.C. Senate seat for District 46 will be contested. Republican incumbent Warren Daniel of Burke County holds this office. The filing fee is $139.51.
On Monday, Warren filed to run for another term as state senator. On Tuesday, John Ager of Fairview filed to run as a Democratic candidate for this office, according to the website for the N.C. Board of Elections.
On Monday, Republican incumbent Jake Johnson of Columbus filed to run for another term as a state representative for the 113th District, which includes a portion of McDowell County, according to the website for the N.C. Board of Elections.
The N.C. House of Representatives seat for the 85th District will be up for grabs, too. The filing fee is $139.51.
On Tuesday, Republican incumbent Dudley Greene of Newland filed to run for another term as the state House member for the 85th District, which covers most of McDowell County.
Also, Corey J. MacKinnon of Nebo filed Monday to run for District Court judge. He is a Republican, according to the website for the N.C. Board of Elections.Of course, there will be a variety of statewide offices, the U.S. House of Representatives and the presidency of the United States on the 2024 primary ballot.
Filing fees must be paid by check or money order. You should make checks payable to the McDowell County Board of Elections.
